The use of traditional "composition ornaments" as an architectural
element to adorn interior architecture, furniture, fireplaces and
wall decor dates back to the 1500's. It was then that the recipes,
manufacturing process and application methods were created by Italian
craftsmen to replace costly hand-carved ornamentation. The use of
"compo" continued to grow and thrive throughout Europe and held a
significant role in European architecture for more than 400 years and
eventually found its way to the United States.
Today the same materials and methods are employed at Bomar Designs to
create this special and time enduring ornamentation. All of our
composition ornaments are individually hand made at our facility in
Louisburg, Kansas. While we have modernized some of the procedures
and components used in making our traditional composition ornaments
much of the whole process is done exactly as it was hundreds of years
ago. Each appliqu is individually crafted by hand, many from the
original hand-carved wood molds. The result is a traditional,
beautiful and cost effective way to adorn your products or
architectural projects.
Endless Possibilities
Create ornate frames. Add interest to ceilings, archways, mantles,
crown moldings, cornices and cabinetry. Build chairs, benches, beds,
armoirs and mirrors with ageless adornments. Accessorize children's
furniture with angels, geese or ribbons. Bring an old piece of
furniture from shabby to chic. Create a new look for your
professional craft that's all your own. Create unique home decor
accessories.
Adds Value
Bomar Designs' ornaments offer you one of the quickest, easiest and
most cost effective ways to add value to your products. Once you
have applied one piece of compo, you're an expert. It's easy and
creative and allows you to go beyond the basic design.
Easy to Apply
When the clay-like ornaments are gently steamed, they become
temporarily pliable and self-adhesive which allows you to mold the
ornaments to nearly any clean dry surface, no matter the shape, with
almost invisible joints. Compo allows you to customize your products
with surprisingly few extra steps and materials.
Easy to Finish
Compo can be stained, painted, gilded, glazed, faux finished and
antiqued. It can be finished before steaming or after applying.
